About Me

Hi, my name is Haylee and I love crafts of all kinds, but the one craft I enjoy most of all is crochet 💚

Although I have a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, which has (almost) nothing to do with art, I have always loved the creative freedom that art provides and feel the need to create in my free time.

“Art is not a luxury, but a necessity” – Rebecca West

Not only do I enjoy creating art, but I also take pride in being able to teach others and build community through sharing what I know.

I have three cats — Cleo, Archie and Cowboy. Sometimes they like to model my crochet work.

I pay them in exposure.

How I got started with Crochet

When I was about 9 years old, my Grandy taught my sister and I how to crochet during a summer visit to New Jersey.

My first (and only) project was to create a scarf.

Did I ever finish the project? No. Did it look like a scarf? Perhaps, if you squinted your eyes and put it on a Barbie doll.

When I came back home after that summer, my crochet hook and project were abandoned for other activities. I didn’t pick up a crochet hook again until I was 25 years old and suddenly my social media feeds were full of cute plushies, key-chains, and clothes. My older sister gifted me a beginner’s crochet kit for Christmas that year, and I began learning how to crochet again.

My first step back into crochet was to follow a pattern that started with the dreaded ‘magic circle’. I gave up after about 45 frustrating minutes of not being able to figure it out (don’t let this scare you, I eventually figured out how to make a magic circle!!).

I almost gave up entirely on crochet since I have a bad habit of giving up on things if I am not perfect at it immediately — something I am working on to this day. However, I switched gears and decided to follow a tiktok tote bag tutorial, which did not require a magic circle and only needed simple squares of single crochets. And I did it!

It wasn’t perfect and I actually didn’t do the single crochets the correct way, but I finally made something and that was all my brain needed to become attached to the art.

I hope I can spark the same passion in others, or share my patterns with those who already have it!
