It’s Renn Faire season! And if you live in a warmer climate like me, that means it’s gonna be hot and you’ll probably want to wear a flowy skirt. What better way to decorate your outfit to fit the times AND stay cool than to crochet this quick and easy skirt hike!
Skirt hikes were historically used for practical reasons, but they add a stylistic flair that goes great with the many layers used in Renaissance attire. If you choose to wear multiple skirts, this skirt hike can lift the top layer to expose the skirt below!

I’ve seen a ton of people wearing leather skirt hikes lately when looking up renn faire outfit inspiration, and I thought – “hey I can make this myself (¬ ₃ ͡¬) “.
This project is totally beginner friendly, and super quick to work up!
૮( •̀ Ⱉ •́ )ა .ᐟ.ᐟ Important Notes!
- Skill level: Beginner – single crochets, slip stitches
- Yarn choice: Any kind, I used acrylic yarn since it’s cheaper
- Size: The finished skirt hike is about 4 inches or 10 cm in length from one end to the other (including the rings), and about 1 inch or 2.5cm wide
- Stitch Count: The turning chain at the end of each row does not count as a stitch
(๑•ᴗ•๑)✂— Materials Needed:
- Size 4 yarn ~4g
- 4mm crochet hook
- 2 Split key rings (you can also use O or D rings)
- Darning needle
- Scissors
- Stitch markers (optional)
(╭ರ_•́)ა .ᐣ.ᐣ Abbreviations to know (US):
- sl knt – Slip knot
- ch – Chain
- sl st – Slip stitch
- sc – Single crochet
- st(s) – Stitch(es)
(•̀ᴗ•́)و✎… Instructions:
Row 1: sl knt, ch 5, starting at the 2nd ch from hook sc 4, ch 1 and turn (4 sts)

Rows 2 – 39: sc 4, ch 1 and turn (4 sts)
*Depending on whether you’d like to make the skirt hike longer or shorter, you can crochet more or less rows. Personally, I crocheted until the strip was 7.5 inches long.

Row 40: add both split key rings halfway onto the strip, then fold the strip in half and line up your next row with the beginning ch row. sl st 4, joining the bottom and top of the strip together with each st. cut and weave ends.

✧。٩(ˊᗜˋ )و✧*。 And now the skirt hike is complete!! I made a black one and a brown one to match my leather belts, but you can make them in any color or length.
Let me know if you made this in the comments below! Happy Renn Fairing !!
