How to Single Crochet

A single crochet (sc) is one of the most basic crochet stitches, and is usually the first stitch you will learn after the slip knot, the chain, and the magic circle. Single crochet is most often used in plushies (also known as amigurumi), but can be used as a staple in any project or compound stitch.

Here is how to single crochet with step-by-step instructions:

1. Looking at the project from the top, this v-shape will be the next stitch. The arrow indicates where the hook will go2. Insert the hook under both loops of the next stitch (you should always insert under both loops unless it’s a BLO or FLO stitch)
3. Yarn over (put the working yarn over the hook) and pull it back through both loops of the stitch to add a loop to your hook4. There should now be two loops on your hook
5. Yarn over, then pull it all the way through both loops on the hook6. You should now only have one loop on your hook. This is a single crochet !! ✧。٩(ˊᗜˋ )و✧*。

Repeat steps 1-6 for as many single crochets needed for the pattern!

For single crochet, chain 1 and turn your work when beginning the next row.

How do you single crochet into a chain?

Crocheting into the starting chain is only slightly different since you will be placing the single crochet into the back loop only, or BLO, instead of through both loops.

Here is how to single crochet into a chain with step-by-step instructions:

1. Here is a starting chain. The blue arrow is the back loop. The red is the front loop2. Insert the hook into the back loop only (BLO)
3. Yarn over and pull it back through the back loop to add a loop to your hook4. There should now be two loops on your hook
5. Yarn over, then pull it all the way through both loops on the hook6. You should now only have one loop on your hook. This is a single crochet !! ✧。٩(ˊᗜˋ )و✧*。

How do you single crochet into a magic circle?

Crocheting into a magic circle is also only slightly different from a normal single crochet. Instead of inserting your hook into a stitch, you will insert your hook underneath the loops of the magic circle itself!

Here is how to single crochet into a magic circle with step-by-step instructions:

1. Start with a magic circle on the hook, pinching the yarn tail and loop in your left hand along with the working yarn above it2. Insert the hook underneath both the yarn tail and loop that you are holding in your left hand
3. Yarn over (put the working yarn over the hook) and pull it back underneath the yarn tail and loop to add a loop to your hook4. There should now be two loops on your hook
5. Yarn over, then pull it all the way through both loops on the hook6. You should now only have one loop on your hook. This is a single crochet !! ✧。٩(ˊᗜˋ )و✧*。

Repeat steps 2-6 for as many single crochets needed for the pattern!

Example – Here I did 6 single crochets into a magic circle:

6 scs in the magic circle. Each sc can be counted by the v-shape stitch on the topTo close the magic circle, grab the yarn tail and pull it tight
The next stitch on a pattern will likely be into the first sc you did into the magic circle
