The chain stitch (ch) is one of the most common stitches to use after you start a slip knot to begin the foundation of a crochet project. Chain stitches can also be used as turning chains to begin a new row, or to create open spaces within a row.
Here is how to make a chain stitch with step-by-step instructions:

| 1. Here I am starting with a slip knot already on my hook with the working yarn to the left | 2. Bring the working yarn up behind the hook and over it (this is called yarning over!) |

| 3. Pull the working yarn through the slip knot loop we already had on the hook! That’s it !! ✧。٩(ˊᗜˋ )و✧*。 |
Repeat this pattern of yarning over and pulling through the existing loop on the hook to create as many chains as needed. It’s easy!
Here, I have created 5 chains:

Each chain stitch has a sideways ‘V’ shape, so that is how you can count the number of chains.
