How to Make a Chain Stitch

The chain stitch (ch) is one of the most common stitches to use after you start a slip knot to begin the foundation of a crochet project. Chain stitches can also be used as turning chains to begin a new row, or to create open spaces within a row.

Here is how to make a chain stitch with step-by-step instructions:

1. Here I am starting with a slip knot already on my hook with the working yarn to the left2. Bring the working yarn up behind the hook and over it (this is called yarning over!)
3. Pull the working yarn through the slip knot loop we already had on the hook!
That’s it !! ✧。٩(ˊᗜˋ )و✧*。

Repeat this pattern of yarning over and pulling through the existing loop on the hook to create as many chains as needed. It’s easy!

Here, I have created 5 chains:

Each chain stitch has a sideways ‘V’ shape, so that is how you can count the number of chains.
